Against the backdrop of the Colorado Wet Mountains, beyond the mist sweeping through the deep green thick of quiet forests scraping the sky, there’s the thunderous sound of waves beating against riverbeds.
If you’re thinking it’s the same enjoyable thrill as the Royal Gorge raft trips we all know and love, you’d be close. But in fact, something even more treasured exists beyond the raft companies lining Highway 50.
Each year, the quaint town of Cañon City hosts a two-day staple community event that celebrates the majestic Arkansas River, which runs alongside the heart of downtown. And it’s a festival athletes, families, and river lovers have returned to enjoy for 17 years.
It’s none other than the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival.
So what makes this festival so great, and why is rafting such a big part of it?
For more than 50 years, the Royal Gorge Region has been home to world-class whitewater rafting. While the kayaking hobby made a big splash in the 1940s, commercial rafting didn’t find its perfect wave until the 1970’s. Since then, rafting has molded the region into a sought-after, thrilling whitewater adventure destination unlike any other.
Just eight miles from Cañon City, you can take your run of the Royal Gorge, enjoying notable rapids like “Wallslammer,” “Sunshine Falls,” and “The Narrows,” great for champion rafters and adrenaline-junkies seeking class IV and V waters. For family-friendly trips most everyone enjoys the Bighorn Sheep Canyon, a class II and III style set of rapids.
The Royal Gorge Region is a major adventure hub in Southern Colorado, hosting some of the longest-running river rafting seasons in the state. Spanning from April to September, the river provides ample opportunity to enjoy the splendors of the Arkansas River.
More Than Just a Big Party On the River
Since 2009, the event has remained a vital asset to the community, raising funds that transformed Centennial’s Whitewater Park into an honored place of recreation. The fundraiser has since evolved to help preserve the Arkansas River and its culture, while supporting initiatives encouraging safety, education, and fun on the river.
With Fremont County having access to only one community pool in the area, children and adults flock to the river to enjoy the waves, creating a new generation of what fun on the water looks like. Passionate Cañon City locals recognized the need for river education and safety for its Fremont County citizens.
The festival celebrating Cañon City’s Arkansas River culture is made possible through the collaboration of three local organizations: Royal Gorge RIO, Fremont Community Foundation, and Royal Gorge Chamber Alliance. Each group contributes its own expertise, and together they have successfully sustained and grown the event for nearly two decades. The trio of organizations is supported by over 200 volunteers, who work to make the festival enjoyable for residents and visitors alike, encouraging them to return every year.
So What Makes This Festival So Great?
Well, it’s the biggest party of the summer in Cañon City with a slew of exciting river events that prompt residents and visitors to gather and perch at the edge of any rock or grass patch near the raging riverbank.
With beer in hand and sunglasses on, you can watch professional kayakers and rafters race to the finish line for a chance at awards in head-to-head races or slaloms. In nearby pools standing still next to rushing rivers, you’ll find kiddos splashing around, taking a cool soak on a hot day.
But That’s Not All You’ll See
Watch surfers rock the play wave, performing board tricks for cheers before crashing into the nearby swirling eddy, or marvel at teams as they launch their riverboats shaped like monstrous dragons or pirate ships in the Build Your Own Boat Race.
Amateur engineers race against time to build the sturdiest floating vessel using nothing but cardboard and plastic for a chance at the Cardboard Cup. Will they float? Will they sink? Who knows! Whoever makes it to the end before their boat goes under wins.
The most anticipated event of the weekend is the shenanigan-filled Raft Rodeo in which river rats showcase their rafting skills (and silliness) by who can ride a wave the longest and who can hold the longest headstand in their raft. Some may ride the wave for impressively long periods, while others crash into the water before they stand a chance. All the while as the crowd loses their minds, cheering for the best trick and costume-clad raft guide.
Run, Bike, and Hike
And, hey, if getting wet isn’t your thing, the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival has that covered, too. For participants who love intense mountain biking trails or long runs along cliff edges, there are 5K and 10K races on foot or on wheels.
Glimpse the river between rock cliffs and canyon walls as your heart races with each elevation climb. Run alongside the quieter parts of the river between towering cottonwood trees with your jogging buddy. Get to know each curve of Cañon City’s best biking trails, all of which are carefully managed by local recreation group, Fremont Adventure Recreation (FAR).
Cheer For Pups, Shop For Souvenirs, Or Simply Just Be
Cheer on your favorite short-legged fur buddy in the famous Weenie Dog Race as dachshunds dressed in hot dog costumes rush to the finish line. Or start your morning with some relaxing yoga in Centennial Park.
After the river and land events wind down, meander through the hundreds of different vendors and creators selling unique knick-knacks, handmade goods, outdoor gear, and art to remind you of your day on the Arkansas.
If you wander far enough, you might find yourself marveling at the second annual “A River Runs Through It” juried art show, which features river-themed artistic creations from over a dozen local Fremont County artists.
When dusk finally arrives and the cool river air sweeps in, grab some barbecue or a funnel cake from a nearby food vendor, find a cozy spot on a blanket in the grass, and enjoy live music across two stages—blending genres like rock, country, blues, and reggae—all as the sun descends on the Wet Mountains.
Dance around if you like, or just sway in your chair. The night is yours and there is much to love and appreciate at this festival.
When Colorado residents and visitors want to exchange relaxation for a bit of thrill on the water, steep mountain biking, dancing barefoot in the grass, unique handmade items, and delicious bites, they come to the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival.
Then they stay for the Arkansas’s symphonies of rushing waves and its adoring community.
