Join Dena Peterson, artist and animator on the film, “Loving Vincent” as we study the life and work of Birger Sandzén in Lindsborg, KS. Though relatively unknown today, Sandzén was once described as the “American Van Gogh.” In 1894, he became a teacher and head of the art department at Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS. He loved the Smoky Hill River Valley and Graham County in Kansas, and often painted the plains, rivers, and outcroppings of this area. He taught at the Broadmoor Art Academy in 1923 and 1924. The FAC has multiple Sandzén works in its collection. We’ll tour the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, explore plein aire basics in oil or acrylic paints with a focus on how to simplify and design a landscape, and paint in some of Sandzen’s favorite locations. Some experience in preferred painting medium is highly recommended. MORE
